Arrowmont Winter Pentaculum

For 5 days, I was with a cohort of curators at a school for arts and crafts. It was just what I needed to start the year—conversing with other artists and their mediums of ceramics, glass, metal, textiles, and fibers, creative writing, and then us, curatorial in the inaugural edition of the program.

We met with Knoxville curators at their respective institutions to hear about their missions and initiatives to rewrite the correlations between craft and fine art. We had the opportunity to bond and convene with like-minded creatives to discuss what they do and see daily, from teaching to career issues and how they’ve overcome setbacks. Practicing artists in the thick of their process is a unique time to see how work is made and investigated, and it should be a priority for curators to understand their artists and the work they research.
